MarcoPolo 2017 Workshop and Final Meeting

The MarcoPolo Workshop took place 1-2 March 2017 at the Tsinghua University in Beijing. This two-day event was aimed at companies and organizations interested in using MarcoPolo products such as improved emission inventories for China, the ensemble air quality forecast for China, and regional hi-resolution emission inventories. Preceding the workshop, at 28 February, the MarcoPolo Final Meeting was held, directed at consortium partners only.

Air Quality Forecast Ensemble Now Counts 7 Models

mtpThe air quality ensemble has been expanded with two more models: EMEP, operated by, and LOTOS-EUROS, operated by TNO. The ensemble consist now of 7 models. By combining the individual model forecast a more accurate prediction is obtained. On the forecast page one can now view the hourly ensemble mean and the ensemble median. The mean provides the averaged model forecast, the median provides the middle (typical) value of the model forecasts. The latter is less sensitive to outliers in model predictions, and is supposed to give the most reliable forecast.

Joint PANDA and MarcoPolo meeting in Guanghzhou

From 24 to 26 February 2016, the joint PANDA and MarcoPolo meeting took place in Guangzhou, hosted by the School of Atmospheric Sciences SYSU. On the second day, a joint workshop was held with users, stakeholders and policy makers interested in the MarcoPolo and PANDA products.

Air quality forecast service now includes SILAM simulations

The MarcoPolo-Panda air quality service has been further extended with forecasts of the SILAM model, delivered by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). The model currently has a 0.125 degree lon-lat resolution (~ 10km x 14km) and covers the whole China, India, Japan, and neighbouring South-East Asian countries. New forecasts of PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) are available each day around 05 UTC.

Air quality forecast service now includes C-IFS model

c-fs_newsThe MarcoPolo-Panda air quality service has been extended with forecasts of the C-IFS model. C-IFS is the integrated forecast system with inline chemistry from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Daily a new two-day forecast is available for China for the important air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3). For a selection of cities, the simulations are compared directly with local station measurements. The MarcoPolo-Panda air quality service already contained forecasts from the CHIMERE model. The system will be extended with more air quality models in the near future.
